Currently threads on the all message view page are listed by the time the top level post was created (most recent first) and this is the time that is displayed for that thread.

For the semantics of threaded discussion sit would make more sense to indicate the last date of activity in the thread and sort accordingly - this allows active conversations to appear at the top and inactive ones to bubble down the lists.
