Zhen, you might find some of the comments on SAK-3059 informative as you think about this. Personally, for points-based situations, I'm in favour of leaving an entry blank, rather than explicitly entering a zero, when there is no submission. Math-wise they are treated the same under most circumstances, but they provide a chance to treat non-submissions differently, particular if you are exporting the grade data and working with it in Excel or other statistical application.
Thanks for the link to SAK-3059, Peter.
I agree with Owen: ".... was that that non-submissions must get a default numerical value so that the cumulative score never had an undetermined state. And the choice of zero followed logically." And I agree with Marc: "...I'm rethinking this issue with more of an instructor perspective (see my rationale below) and believe that someone not submitting an assessment should, by default, get a zero not a null. However, the instructor should also know the submission status as well, so I propose that a non-submission be listed like so: "0 (No Submission)" ============= Both of the above strongly support the perspective and needs of practitioners in the field. I would like to see that unsubmitted assignments get the "default grade" of 0 for point-based, F for letter-based etc. Currently, in Samigo, unsubmitted quizzes get the "default grade" of 0. Instructors have the ability to adjust and send to GB. Instructors are asking for the same behavior for unsubmitted Assignments. Zhen - I believe that listing a heading "Assignment Grades to Unsubmitted Ones" would work, and it would expedite the process of adjusting grades for unsubmitted assignments at once. In fact, having them in the same list amongst the submitted assignments seems to be an issue with workflow, as reported by instructors (annoying). Thanks. I believe the No-submission grade text box at the top of the grading screen is there to address Vivie's request for '...listing a heading "Assignment Grades to Unsubmitted Ones" would work, and it would expedite the process of adjusting grades for unsubmitted assignments at once.' I think this functionality would be more clear if the label were changed to 'Assign this grade to all participants without submissions' and appended to the text box rather than prepended since it's so long. Comments?
Good suggestion, Kristol, in terms of usability. I don't mind the length, as it would eliminate confusion and support issues. I am supportive of the wording change. Thanks.
Verified fixed and actually a very nice addition - jrm

I suggest we have a link next to "Download All" and "Release Grades", which is named something like "Assignment Grades to Unsubmitted Ones". By using the link, instructor can choose the default grade for those unsumitted and grade all at once.
Unless there is a strong need to assignment different grades to different students who haven't submitted...
