 Description  « Hide
The top level of resources has a close folder icon (the rollover text reads "close this folder"). Yet, the folder cannot be closed and the icon is confusing to users. (See screenshot)

Either a third icon needs to be developed for the root folder, or the icon needs to be removed entirely.

I think it might be that the folder icon isn't working - you should be able to close up the root folder too, to make more room to see the other site folders for example.

Jim Eng - 09-Jun-2006 09:33
The root folder of the site is not supposed to close. Not sure what icon is appropriate. Should not have a roll-over title saying "Close the folder".

SVN 11479, 11480,

Clay Fenlason - 06-Jul-2006 13:47
The icon now (2.2.0.008) just shows a folder without a +/- sign. Which works up until the point where you try to look at other sites, where it becomes impossible to expand the root folders of other sites, and you have to fiddle with it until you realize that the only way to get at those items is by clicking on the title to drill down into them. Expansion is no longer an option.

I think this counts as a regression as confusing and problematic as the original problem this was trying to solve - a better solution is needed. I think John's right - you should be able to close the root folders, too.

Reopening.

Gonzalo Silverio - 06-Jul-2006 14:01
Not sure I understand.

If the "other site" has no resources, it will show a closed folder with no + or - sign. There is nothing to expand into. I am fairly sure this has been the case for a while now.

If the other site has resources - it will show a closed folder with a + unless it is expanded, and then it will show an open folder with a - In both cases is will be clickable (to expand and collapse)

The only root folder that will show an open folder that cannot be closed (no - sign) is the root folder of the site itself.

Can you clarify? I may be confused.

SAK-5153 seems to be very closely related to SAK-4664. Possibly SAK-4664 can be closed, as SAK-5153 contains specific suggestions for resolving the issue?

Megan May - 28-Jul-2006 06:19
That seems acceptable to me

Gonzalo Silverio - 08-Sep-2006 08:23
Not sure where this stands - please read my note above. Can someone clarify what the problem is (with a use case if at all possible) and what the solution needs to be?

Thanks.

Clay Fenlason - 25-Sep-2006 08:31
Tried this against 2.3.0.003, with content in multiple sites.

It behaves as Gonzalo describes above, with the +/- icon appearing for other sites as they should, and the "Close this folder" rollover from the original report no longer appears.

Introducing a novel icon for the top-level folder seems a questionable way forward, given how the "Show other sites" area operates, where the root-level folder really should be a folder. It seems only consistent to retain this metaphor.

Marking as resolved, since all clear reported issues no longer appear.

Derek Ramsey - 04-Oct-2006 07:34
The text for closing the root level folder is no longer appearing. Closing

Steve Lonn - 04-Oct-2006 07:44
Yes, the text has been removed, but the icon is still confusing to the end user. Either the icon should be removed entirely, or a different icon should be used so users don't try to "close" or "delete" this folder and become frustrated when they can't.

Please reopen this issue

This should be a design issue for 2.5

People are still getting REALLY confused by the folder icon next to the root folder -- and that icon should be consistent in the Show other sites section as well.

Harriet Truscott - 07-Sep-2007 05:25
I agree it's a problem, and I think we're going to need to incorporate this with the Fluid work on Resources.

As you say, people try to click on the folder thinking that it is another sub-folder.

Might one idea be to incorporate the 'Expand all / contact all' icon with the Root Folder icon, to give something that is distinctly different ?

We need to remember in designing this that the icon should take account of the the Show Other Sites icons too.

Gonzalo Silverio - 28-Sep-2007 12:08
I would be happy to follow a firm recommendation, is there one on this case?

Gonzalo Silverio - 18-Aug-2008 10:43
Recommendations? I cannot see Fluid work addressing this anytime soon, or at all directly if I understand the FLUID scope. If this is indeed a problem we can address it quickly and neatly, but we do need some design work....
