      Description

Instructors want the rich text description of a resource to be visible to students. There is consensus in the community that this is important functionality. IU will implement this feature in a branch as a DHTML popup on hover. This implementation will then be evaluated for possible inclusion in the 2.5 release. Thanks, L

This patch contains the code that is being used at IU for this (slightly tweaked for 2.5.x). See the screnshot to see what it looks like. This is the deemed inaccssible version though I suspect it is actually not as bad as it was given modern screen readers.

Do we want to try to upgrade this patch to use fluid influsion and get this into trunk? It looks like it would require some minor rewriting and updates to the static code to include the newest version of fluid influsion. If this is desirable then please comment here, otherwise I think this issue should be closed out by the maint team.

I cannot believe we are still talking about this issue. Let's make a decision and move forward. IU has been running patched code for way too long. Thanks, L

What's the status on this item? I can verify that professors are asking for a way to share the file descriptions with their students, so they can offer context for each item – what it is, what students should do, etc. Based on the comment string above, it sounds like the interface action – hover or click – is a key stumbling block? It sounds like hover may not be compatible with modern screen readers for accessibility? Could another interface element be used instead to address this concern? For example, in the Forums tool, there are two fields – short description (which displays on the screen immediately) and long description (which has a "view full description" link to expand/collapse the description). Can something like this be used instead? (I am not an interface expert – just someone that would love to see a solution for this need!) Thanks for considering.
