      Description

Dropdown menus are a problem. When selecting course and/or project sites from "my work space," for example, it is difficult to make a selection using the drop down menu with the arrow keys. Using the screen reader, it is difficult to navigate through the list quickly enough before the appropriate page loads.

Often, one has to make a selection in a dropdown menu when completing a form. The screen reader often does not read the items in the menu when attempting to select an option in the menu with the up and down arrows. For example, when entering a new event in the "schedule" tool, it is necessary to select the type of event using a dropdown menu. I cannot select which type of event because the screen reader will not read the various options as I press the up and down arrows. I have to turn the "browse" mode back on (in Window Eyes) in order to apprehend which item I have selected. (When "browse" (MSAA) mode is on, I can navigate the web page using the arrow keys. When it is off, I can perform a particular function while focusing on a particular item, i.e. type text into a box, make a menu selection, etc.) It seems that these drop down menus are more convenient for sighted users who manipulate the mouse. For the purposes of navigating the site with the keyboard, drop menus do not seem to be helpful and may indeed lead to further confusion.
