CLONE -Deleting the first message in a thread causes orphaned messages and counts

      Description

      If the first message in a thread is deleted, the rest of the messages seem to be orphaned.

      Instructors can see the placeholder for the original message and the message count, but not the actual message, and the message counts are wrong.
      Normal users can see that there are messages there, but not see any of them.
