      Description

We recently got hit with a problem where an instructor was unable to listen to his students' audio responses to a Samigo assessment. On doing some digging, we found a warning in the Sakai log file indicating the students' files were missing:

WARN: file not found=/tmp/jsf/upload_tmp/assessment1/question1/mizematr_stu/audio_1.au (No such file or directory) (2009-02-17 13:31:37,528 http-8082-Processor22_org.sakaiproject.tool.assessment.ui.servlet.delivery.ShowMediaServlet)

Upon further investigation, we found that our sakai.properties had /tmp/ set as the value for samigo.answerUploadRepositoryPath. This won't work for us, as whenever our Sakai server is rebooted, the /tmp/ directory is cleaned out (I believe this is the default behavior for Solaris). So, we have to surmise that when we last rebooted the server, all of the audio files which were stored in the /tmp/ directory were removed.

Because I didn't remember manually setting samigo.answerUploadRepositoryPath, I did a little more digging and found that the example sakai.properties file included at reference/docs/sakai.properties has samigo.answerUploadRepositoryPath set to /tmp/. Because we used the example file as the basis for our sakai.properties file, the /tmp/ slipped through into production.

To help other institutions avoid this problem, I'd recommend simply changing the example value for samigo.answerUploadRepositoryPath to something that probably won't exist (/opt/sakai/samigo/audio_uploads, etc). Better to have audio recordings not work OOTB than to lose one or more test's worth of recordings down the road; and the settings weren't hard to find/fix once I knew what I was looking for.
