Click Add Gradebook Item button. Name it, put in other category.

Go back to Settings > Categories and Weighting.
Either click Remove button by each category name, or switch to "No Categories" radio button.
      Click Save Changes button.
See "The settings were successfully updated" notification at top of page.

      Click back into Grades tab.
Category columns will still be in spreadsheet.
Try to remove by clicking down arrow in column header and selecting "Hide Item."
Try updating page by clicking browser's refresh icon.

The only way I've been able to get page to reload without categories - or to put them back - is to click the Gradebook tool title at the top of the page.

      Description

Set up a gradebook with 2 categories. Can be weighted or not weighted categories.
Put a couple items into each category.
Decide that you don't want to use categories, and remove the categories.

Expected behavior: the categories go away, and are no longer visible in the Settings > Categories and Weighing tab, in the Grades spreadsheet view, nor in the *View/Hide *tab.

What happens: the categories are being retained, sorta. They are visible in the spreadsheet (as columns) and, if you go back into the Settings >Categories and Weighing tab and select "Categories" again, they reappear. Can't even choose to hide the category column in the spreadsheet; clicking the dropdown for the column and selecting "Hide item" doesn't remove it.

It appears, after much clicking, that the only way to get rid of the categories is to click the "Gradebook" tool title at the top of the page to force a refresh (using the browser refresh doesn't do it).

This isn't obvious to a user. Once they see the notification that their changes have been saved, they expect the page to reload with the changes. If we can't force that to happen, we should give them instructions on how to force the page to reload to show their updates.
