      1. In a site with at least 3 students, Forums, and Gradebook, create TWO gradebook items. Label one DO NOT USE (you won't be entering grades in this second item, but it's good to have at least a couple to populate the drop-down menu in Forums).
      2. Create a forum with at least one topic - leave all settings default. Do NOT select a gradebook item to associate with EITHER the forum OR topic in the settings for the forum/topic.
      3. Log in as Student 1 and post in the topic.
      4. Log in as Student 2 and either reply to the first student's post or post a new conversation.
      5. Log in as Student 3 and either reply to one of the other posts or post a new conversation.
      6. As instructor, go to the topic.
      7. Go to a conversation's post and click the Grade button to the right of Student 1's name.
      8. In the pop-up window, note the presence of the Select a Gradebook item drop-down with no item selected.
      9. Choose the gradebook item where you will enter grades.
      10. Enter a Grade (whether it's points or percentages will depend on your GB settings).
      11. Click Submit Grade.
      12. Refresh the Forums tool.
      13. Return to the topic > conversation where you just entered the grade for the student.
      14. Click the Grade link.
      15. If issue fixed: In the pop-up window, you'll see the item selected and grade you entered.
        • If issue present: In the pop-up window, note the presence of the Select a Gradebook item drop-down with no item selected.

      Description

Using the grading modal to grade a student's post (in a forum and topic that were not previously associated with a gradebook item), may appear to the user as having lost their data.

In fact, the user data is not actually lost; it is saved the the Gradebook properly behind the scenes. However, upon returning to the same user's post and clicking the 'Grade' button again does not load the previously selected gradebook item and grade/comment which was saved.
