The first issue for no required answer:

Instructor: Add a Lessons Question, select short answer, add question text, Save.

Student: Submit a question response. The student should not see anything in the upper left corner, outside of the question. Instead, the student will see a red "X", as though the answer is wrong.

The second issue for a required answer:

Instructor: Add a Lessons Question, select short answer, add question text, near the bottom, check "Require This Item", Save. The instructor and student should see an asterisk in the upper left corner outside of the question, denoting a required item.

Student: Submit a question response. The student should see a green checkmark in the upper left corner outside of the question, denoting a required item had been submitted, but instead, the student sees a red "X" in the upper left corner.

      Description

One of our instructors created a Lessons Question, short answer, but they didn't add a possible answer and didn't add feedback if the submission was right or wrong.

      • After a student submitted the short answer response, instead of a space, the student sees a red "X" in the upper left corner, outside the question box.
      • But the question isn't necessarily right or wrong. The student shouldn't see a red "X", implying the answer is wrong.

Also, the instructor made the Lessons short answer Question required.

      • An asterisk is added and located in the upper left corner outside the required question (in the same location the red "X" for incorrect answers and green checkmark display for correct answers).
      • If a student answers a required question, the asterisk should change to a green checkmark.
      • But after a student submits a required short-answer response, they don't see a green checkmark replace the asterisk like they should. Instead, the student sees a red "X".

FYI: If an instructor does add a possible (correct) answer to a short answer question and makes the question required, again, an asterisk displays outside of the question in the upper left corner.

      • If the student gets the required question correct, a green checkmark displays correctly.
      • But if the student's submission is incorrect, a red "X" displays, even though the required question has been submitted.
      • The incorrect red "X" status and required submission green checkmark status occupy the same location. In this case, it's better the student knows the answer was incorrect, but reusing the same location for multiple status's looks like a potential problem.

Tested on Trunk, nightly and our 19.2 instance.
