      1. As instructor, create a site with Tests & Quizzes and at least 3 students.
      2. Create an assessment with at least one of each type of question.
      3. Provide a variety of scoring combinations on the questions so it's possible to get partial credit on at least some auto-graded questions (e.g., multiple choice, multiple selection with correct minus incorrect scoring, matching).
      4. In the Settings, under Grading and Feedback:
        • Enable Feedback on Submission
        • Display questions and additional feedback (options expand when selected).
        • Select Only the questions the student answered incorrectly.
        • Select several feedback settings, e.g.: Student's submitted answers (Student Response), Answer Key (Correct Response), Student's question and part scores.
      5. Save and publish quiz.
      6. Take quiz as Student 1, answering all questions correctly.
      7. Check feedback and verify that ONLY the manually-graded questions (short answer/essay, audio reponse, file upload) are shown as feedback.
      8. Take quiz as Student 2, answering some questions correctly and some incorrectly (make note of which questions you answered correctly vs. incorrectly). Make sure to get partial credit for some questions.
      9. Check feedback and make sure the only questions shown are ones you answered incorrectly and the manually-graded questions.
      10. Take quiz as Student 3, answering some questions correctly and some incorrectly (make sure the incorrectly-answered questions are different from Student 2's, and make note of which questions you answered correctly vs. incorrectly.)
      11. Check feedback and make sure the only questions shown are ones you answered incorrectly and the manually-graded questions.
      12. Regression testing also needed for other aspects of feedback, e.g., ensuring that feedback shown at specific dates works, etc.

      Description

We've received an increasing number of requests from instructors to show students feedback on just the questions those students answered incorrectly. In some cases, they want to show question-level feedback, others want to show an answer key, but the main idea is that they don't want to reveal all the questions and answer options to students as part of the feedback.

Per the Assessment settings label suggestions doc, the proposed option would require a new section on the Settings page that would appear after selecting "Display questions and additional feedback (options expand when selected)."

Which questions should be displayed as feedback?

      • All questions.
      • Only questions the student answered incorrectly.
Note: Short answer/essay, student audio response, and file upload questions do not have "correctness" and always display if questions are shown.

A message for students would also need to be displayed at the top of the Feedback page when only incorrectly-answered questions are shown, e.g.:

The questions displayed below are ones you answered incorrectly and [question types listed for manually-graded questions that were included in assessment].

      Example with question types included:

The questions displayed below are ones you answered incorrectly and short answer/essay and file upload questions.

      Questions/Caveats:

      • How would this feedback display during an assessment if instructor enabled Immediate Feedback? If a student clicks the Feedback link on a question they answered correctly, does it just disappear from view with a message saying it was correct??
