      Hide

Note: This should be tested with keyboard/screen reader as well.

      1. Create a site with Tests & Quizzes.
      2. Go to the Tests & Quizzes Add page and start creating an assessment from scratch with the Assessment Builder option.
      3. From the Add Question menu, select Fill in the Blank.
      4. Underneath the checkbox for Extra Credit, you should find a group of two radio buttons labeled "Fill In The Blank Field Markers". The radio button options should be the following:
        • Default
        • Custom
Under these two radio button options should also be some text explaining why you might want to change the setting from default to custom: "*Use custom markers if you need { or } in your question text." This helper text should also be read to a screen reader user when they arrive at the radio button grouping.
      5. Select Custom.
      6. A new "Custom Markers" text box should appear. In the text box, the default markers of {} should display. Underneath the text box should be the following helper/explanatory text:

*Opening and closing marker must be different characters.
        *Reserved characters " ' . , | * and space may not be used.

The text should also be read to a screen reader user upon getting focus in the text box.

      7. Change the markers in the field to something different, e.g.: ()
      8. Click or tab out of the custom markers field and read the text under the Defining Answers section of the page. It should include the custom markers in the examples for authoring.
      9. Enter question text using your appropriate answer markers in the field provided, e.g., "Roses are (red) and violets are (blue)."
      10. Save the question.
      11. Edit the question.
      12. Navigate down to the "Fill In The Blank Field Markers" radio button group. Change the option back to Default.
      13. Now read the instructions under Defining Answers. All the explanations should include the curly bracket default markers.
      14. Without making any other changes, scroll to the bottom of the page and Save.
      15. The page should refresh with the following error message at the top: "Please make sure your answer markers match and answers must contain at least one non-space character." This is because you reset the answer markers to the curly brackets without changing your question text.
      16. Change a pair of the answer markers in the question text to curly brackets and Save. It should now save successfully. Note: If one answer is left with the previous custom markers, it should now instead display as part of the question text and not a blank with its contents listed in the answer key, e.g., "Roses are ___ and violets are (blue)" and the answer key would show just "red".

      Description

SAK-34477 implemented a custom answer markers option for fill in the blank questions. Currently, when a user arrives on the page to create/edit a fill in the blank question, the answer markers field is shown to them with no explanation as to what it means or why you would want to edit it. The vast majority of users do NOT need to enable custom markers and having the text field displayed to them is confusing.

The option should be available with a radio button, where an explanation as to its use case is provided.

If and only if the user selects the Custom option for the field markers should they be presented with the field to edit these markers.
